Cette localité pakistanaise où fut tué Oussama ben Laden tire son nom de celui du général britannique qui l'a fondée en 1853, peu après l'annexion du Pendjab par les armées de la reine Victoria. (Le Pakistan fut fondé en 1947. En ourdou et en persan, son nom signifie le « pays des purs ».)
En ourdou, Abbottabad signifie « la ville d'Abbott », tout comme Islamabad veut dire « la ville de l'Islam.»

En anglais, le mot abbot (avec une minuscule) désigne le supérieur d'un monastère. Il vient de l'anglais moyen abbod, du vieil anglais, du bas latin abbat-,abbas, du bas grec abbas, de l'araméen abbā, père.

Following the decision of the United States Administration not to release photos of Ben Laden’s corpse, a new conspiracy theory was created by those who claimed that Ben Laden had not been killed. Supporters of the theory, who range from some extreme political opponents of Obama in the United States (a fringe group) to many Pakistanis (a large proportion of the population), are now called “deathers”, although this is not a new term.
They are also described as “proofers” (people demanding proof of the killing).
